Performing arts students are spoiled for choice in Chicago. There are numerous universities, conservatories and apprentice programs available in all disciplines with teachers selected from the world-renowned ensembles based in the city. Musicians and singers can study for undergraduate and post-graduate music degrees at the American Conservatory of Music. Opera singers who are on the brink of a professional career can train with the Chicago Opera Theater. Dancers can apprentice at the prestigious Joffrey Ballet. Music and theatre students can study at the
Chicago College of the Performing Arts.
Labor market projections for full-time employment in the performing arts sectors are not, on the surface, too optimistic. The average job growth rate for Chicago is 11% through to 2012. Musicians and singers come in at 7% whilst dancers and actors are expected to be 2% and 4% respectively. It must be remembered though that full-time jobs are extremely hard to come by in the performing arts, particularly for young artists. It is possible to make a good living doing freelance work until a permanent position becomes available. For example, once a musician secures a position in the CSO, they will stay for 30 years.
